THREE HEARTS

Mackenzie (Mac) fled Bluff Point, Maine, seven years ago after being left at the altar on her wedding day.  Heartbroken, she watched he groom take off with one of those women we all knew in high school who most of us didn’t like.  She did find solace though…at least for a short time, in the arms of her best friend, Emma’s brother, Gavin.  It was a night she never forgot…and never intended to repeat because the last thing she wants to do is betray Emma by starting a relationship with her brother.  In the past few years she’s made a life for herself in Chicago—a super job and a boyfriend who doesn’t put too many demands on her.  With Emma’s wedding just around the corner and being the maid of honor, Mac is back in town.  She’s not there long before she finds herself remember just how good things were with Gavin, even if it was only one night.  Despite her best efforts to avoid him or at least a replay of the wedding night that wasn’t, Mac finds herself spending more and more time with Gavin.  She’s also finding herself more and more attracted to him.  And, Gavin is not making things easy for her.  At every turn he lets her know he hasn’t forgotten their one night together and that he wouldn’t mind a repeat – a long term relationship type repeat.  Just when Mac thinks maybe she can make it through Emma’s wedding without succumbing to Gavin’s charms a puppy named Tulip bounces into her life.  It isn’t long before Mac wonders how she can leave Tulip…and Gavin…behind once again.

I’m a long-time fan of Jenn McKinlay’s cozy mysteries with her library lovers series a particular favorite.  Recent books in all her cozy series have had increasing focus on romance rather than on the various sleuths figuring out who done it.  I’m happy McKinlay has branched out and is now writing romance.  When I pick up a mystery I want to read a mystery, not a romance and when I pick up a romance, that’s what I want.  And who can resist a story that features a dog?  Especially a cute little puppy that just melts your heart.  For her first romance McKinlay did a decent job.

Gavin is a hottie.  Plain and simple, you want him for yourself hottie.  Add in the fact that he’s a vet which generally translates into an animal lover, he’s one special kind of guy.  The story on its own was fun…but when Tulip arrives on the scene the story had the added element of being heart-warming.

I’m not sure if it was to up the word count or McKinlay felt it was necessary, but there was some repetition that got a little old after awhile.  I got it after the first fifteen times that Mac felt guilty for getting it on with Emma’s little brother.

I do look forward to not just the next book in the series, but McKinlay’s future writing romance…but please do not leave those cozies behind!
